How to clean your resin moulds

Are you wondering how to care for and clean your resin moulds?

We all know that resin moulds can be really expensive so we take a look at how best to clean them and ensure they last as long as possible.

How to clean silicone moulds

Cleaning resin molds is important to keep them in good condition for future use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you clean your resin molds properly:

1. Let the Resin Fully Cure

Before you start cleaning, ensure that the resin has fully cured. If you try to clean a mold before it’s set, you may damage it or make the resin stick even more.

2. Wear Gloves

It’s a good idea to wear gloves while cleaning to avoid getting resin residue on your hands.

3. Remove Excess Resin

Use a small tool like a craft stick, spatula, or even a soft plastic scraper to remove any leftover cured resin from the mold. Be gentle so you don’t damage the mold’s surface. Even small scratches on moulds can show up on your finished product.

4. Wash with Warm Soapy Water

Fill a sink or bowl with warm water and add a mild dish soap. Submerge the mold and gently scrub it with a soft sponge. This should remove any resin residues.

5. Use Isopropyl Alcohol (Optional)

If there are stubborn spots of resin or you have mica powder or foil etc. left on your moulds, you can use 99% isopropyl alcohol. Dip a cloth or soft brush into the alcohol and gently clean the mold. This can help dissolve sticky spots.

6. Dry the Molds

Once cleaned, let the mold air dry completely before using it again. You can also pat it dry with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. If you find that you’re left with water marks on your mould, you can again wipe over with isopropyl alcohol.

7. Maintain Mold Shape

After cleaning, ensure the mold is stored properly, flat, and in a cool, dry place to maintain its shape and longevity. We love these storage draws for organising our moulds and to keep them free from dust and damage.
